Fern Hill School wins Burlington Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Award
Directors Wendy Derrick and Joanne McLean accepted the Business Excellence Award in the Service Industry (large) for Fern Hill School, Burlington at the gala on May 8, 2008.
"It is truly an honour for us and the school to be recognized by our peers - it reaffirms our commitment to our families and the community, " said Mrs. Derrick.
"The success of Fern Hill School is not just about us: it is about every member of our community. We would not be here without caring and dedicated teachers and staff. We would not be here without committed and dedicated students and we would not be here without the support of parents," added Mrs. McLean.
Fern Hill Parents’ Association (FHPA)
The FHPA in Burlington is a very active organization and an important part of life at Fern Hill School.
Every parent at Fern Hill School is a member of the FHPA. Some parents are able to volunteer a lot of time and others don’t have as much time available. Some are only able to attend one or two meetings and/or events during the school year. Whatever a parent can contribute is very much appreciated. Our activities and events allow us to interact with our children, other parents and the school – fostering a sense of community and school spirit.
Our role is to give our children some fun and useful extras to make their school days just a little bit more exciting. It can be things they enjoy every day, like recess equipment, musical instruments and library books. It can be occasional things, like cultural performances and the birthday books that are donated in a child’s honour on his/her birthday. It can also be the very popular yearly events like the notorious Halloween Party, the Pasta Dinner and Talent Show, the Christmas Gift Shoppe, the Amazing Race, the Sports Day BBQ Lunch… The list goes on and on. We also organize services to parents, for example: clothing labels, the Tuck Shop and Uniform Turnover Sale and the videographer to record the children's Christmas concerts.
Although FHPA is not a fundraising organization, we have to do some fundraising during the school year in order to be able to keep providing fun and useful extras. We make and sell apple crumble pies at Thanksgiving. We hold an auction every spring in combination with a dinner/dance party. We also raise money at the Christmas Bake Sale, the Uniform Turnover Sale and the Indigo Book Fair in November.
The people who get involved with the FHPA all have their own reasons. No matter what their reasons are, the one thing we all agree on is that it’s all about the kids - to see their reactions every time they enjoy one of the fun activities we organize.
That’s what inspires us all to be involved with the Fern Hill Parents’ Association.
