Fern Hill Students Shine at National Math Contest
Each year, Fern Hill students participate in national math contests hosted by the Mathematics Contest Centre at Sacred Heart in Quebec. In the 2009 contests, Fern Hill students excelled in their standings.
A Grade 3 student outperformed the majority of his elementary school competitors by placing in first out of 4,483 students in the Thales Math Contest. The student tied with six others to place first with the highest score.
In the Byron-Germain competition, a Grade 4 student, placed 8th with the third highest score nationwide of 28 points out of 30.
A Grade 7 student placed 8th in the Euler competition with the second highest score. In the Fibonacci contest, a Grade 5 student placed 6th, again with the second highest mark in the competition.
Fern Hill’s curriculum is based on individualized learning allowing students to progress at their own pace. Advanced level students can graduate from Fern Hill with a Grade 9 ministry credit in both Math and French.
“These students are highly motivated and they enjoy the challenge of learning new material and finding solutions in innovative ways,” said mathematics teacher, Lyn Foo. “Many of our students are working at least one year ahead of their current grade level.
The flexibility of the Fern Hill program allows students to move at a pace suitable for them and provides extra time to those who need it.
Did You Know?
French, Music and Physical Education are taught by subject-specific teachers beginning in Preschool. Starting in Grade 3, History, Geography and Science are taught as separate subjects and French Geography is introduced in Grade 6.
Fern Hill students also have the opportunity to take Grade 9 and 10 Ministry approved credit courses in Math and a Grade 9 Ministry approved credit course in French.
