Grade 6, 7 and 8
Achieve Your Potential
Over and over again, Fern Hill is described by students, teachers and parents as more than a school. It is a welcoming community; some call it a family. It is a place our children go each day to expand their knowledge and grow both mentally and socially. Fern Hill is a community that celebrates its diversity. Because the children are treated with dignity and respect, they learn to respect each other, their teachers, their environment and their world.
Through numerous leadership and mentoring opportunities at all grade levels, students learn to be responsible, productive citizens who have the potential to make a significant impact in their communities and in the world. Our Grade 6, 7 and 8 programme provides the opportunity to put these skills into action and provides students with the experience of being school leaders and mentors in a real-world setting.
A Difference that Lasts a Lifetime
Our Grade 6, 7 and 8 programme centres around the academic, social and emotional needs of young adolescents and delivers a well-rounded education, including Academics, the Arts and Physical Education. Additionally, in Grade 8, the use of IBM ThinkPad tablet computers is integrated into academic subjects.
Every student in our Intermediate Programme is provided with opportunities to learn about leadership and practice leadership skills in meaningful ways. Fern Hill students develop increased independence, personal responsibility and accountability as they encounter increasingly higher expectations for academic and behavioural excellence.
Having a senior experience at Fern Hill provides our students with solid leadership responsibilities and allows students to mature before entering Secondary School.
We recognize that students benefit from real-world experiences and are committed to an educational programme that develops global citizens and prepares young people for life in the fullest sense. Interaction with people who hold different perspectives and come from diverse backgrounds prepares Fern Hill students to excel in their future endeavours. We believe that part of that experience is a co-educational environment where girls and boys are working and learning together.
A typical day in Grade 7 and 8
The day starts with homeroom, an opportunity to get organized for the day, check in with classmates and teachers. Then it is off to morning assembly. Assembly is not only an integral part of the day, but also an important part of the Fern Hill experience. The morning assembly is an opportunity to hear about classmates interests’ and talents and to learn about what makes each person unique. It is the time to listen to morning announcements from faculty and other students and to share news of the day, a morning quote and celebrate birthdays and other events. Assemblies are student-led and encourage public speaking and confidence.
Students in Grade 7 and 8 are offered advanced level courses in Mathematics and Science. Grade 8 students often advance to Grade 9 Ontario Ministry of Education credit courses in French. Life Management focuses on personal choices, careers, health and issues surrounding adolescence.
By Grade 8, the use of IBM ThinkPad tablet computers is integrated into the curriculum on a daily basis. Classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards and transformed into computer-based learning centres.
Through community service, Young Round Square activities and leadership and mentoring opportunities, our older students put into action what they’ve witnessed in the early years at Fern Hill.
Students learn to be responsible citizens who can have a significant impact on the world. Our goal is to graduate students who are self-confident and aware of their academic and personal strengths.
Real-world opportunities enable students to learn and grow
In addition to learning about leadership, Fern Hill students experience and practice leadership. Fern Hill is committed to providing our students with an ever-widening array of opportunities to "learn by doing." Our morning assemblies, community service projects and social events are designed to encourage students to do their part in creating a caring society.
Students are given responsibilities, not just rules. Our goal is to help intermediate division students emerge from Grade 8 as caring and compassionate people as well as confident and engaged learners.
Opportunities include:
- Athletic team captains
- House leaders
- Community service leaders
- Sports day leaders
